As I’m sure you know, many cuisines feature spicy dishes: Cajun, Mexican, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, African, Italian and others. Spicy dishes may contain black, green or red peppers, and also other interesting tastes such as garlic, onion, ginger root, curry ingredients, cumin, mustard, cinnamon, cloves, herbs like cilantro or oregano, vinegars and other spices. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently reported the results of an epidemiological investigation into an outbreak of Escherichia coli in Wisconsin in 1998. The study confirms that the source of the outbreak was fresh cheese curds.

Twelve of the fifty-five cases that were confirmed by lab tests could not identify the source of their cheese curd source, but the remaining 43 cases had all been infected by cheese curds from the same dairy product plant in west-central Wisconsin. The dairy plant in question produces 7500 pounds of cheddar and colby a week. However, no infections of E-Coli have been linked to eating cheese of any variety other than curd. (more…)
